Book of Judges

Lesson 10 of 12 September 13, 2021

In week eleven of the Judges series, the class examined the story of Jephthah through the lens of Judges 10-12 and his inclusion in Hebrews 11's Hall of Faith. The teacher introduced the lesson with Baron Batch's testimony—a man born into poverty and family dysfunction who overcame his circumstances to achieve success in college and professional football. This parallel illustrated Jephthah's own remarkable story: despite being born of a prostitute and rejected by his own family, Jephthah became a judge God used to deliver Israel. The class traced Israel's cyclical pattern of sin and redemption, noting that after 45 years of peace under judges Tola and Jer, the Israelites again turned to evil and false gods—ironically the very deities God had defeated for them over three centuries. The Gileadites, desperate for a leader to fight the Ammonites, turned to Jephthah despite his humble origins. The teacher emphasized that this demonstrates God's grace and the importance of the church preparing godly leaders for future generations, not just identifying potential deacons and elders but also missionaries and ministers who will carry faith forward.

Hebrews 11:32

Judges 11:30-31

Then Jephthah answered the Lord, 'You have given the Ammonites and the Amalekites into my hand. And I will go up to the city of Jabesh Gilead and take it.' And the Lord answered him, 'Go, for you shall take the city of Jabesh Gilead.'
