Fixed on Knowing Jesus

Lesson 10 of 17 August 13, 2017

The teacher continued a series on focusing on Jesus by examining Paul's testimony in Philippians 3. Building on previous lessons about fixing our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and fixing our thoughts on Jesus (Hebrews 3:1), this message addressed the importance of being fixed on knowing Jesus. The teacher opened with the observation that focus is critical in every area of life—illustrated through Arnold Palmer's story of losing concentration during the 1961 Masters Tournament, which cost him the championship. Just as focus determines success in golf, parenting, marriage, and work, spiritual focus is paramount in the Christian life. The central text was Philippians 3:4-10, where Paul described his radical transformation. Once he possessed everything the Jewish religious establishment valued: Pharisaic credentials, legal righteousness, influence, authority, and wealth. However, Paul declared that he counted all these gains as loss for the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus. He renounced his former sources of pride to gain Christ and be found in Him, seeking the righteousness that comes through faith rather than through the law. Paul's unwavering focus on knowing Christ, experiencing the power of His resurrection, sharing in His suffering, and being conformed to His death demonstrated a man with singular spiritual concentration. The teacher emphasized that Paul's mind was sharp and fixed on his past, present, and future in relation to Jesus Christ—a stark contrast to human forgetfulness and distraction.

Philippians 3:7-8

But whatever things were gained to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be lost in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord

Philippians 3:10

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, the fellowship of his suffering, being conformed to his death, and nor that I may attain the resurrection of the dead
