Our Identity in Christ

Lesson 2 of 10 July 11, 2024

Steve Zeller taught an encouraging class on understanding our identity in Christ, building on an introductory lesson from the previous week. He emphasized that God has done amazing spiritual things for believers and called them to incredible standards while providing the power to meet those standards through Jesus Christ. The central message explored what makes the gospel "good news"—namely, that it offers not just eternal hope but present spiritual gifts and joy that cannot be taken away by circumstances. Zeller used Proverbs 23:7 ("For as he thinks within himself, so he is") as a foundational principle, arguing that God intentionally places powerful spiritual images before believers in the New Testament to shape their understanding of who they are as Christians. He challenged the congregation to stop viewing themselves primarily through the lens of their failures and sins, noting that the New Testament characteristically refers to sin in the past tense: "you were sinners," not "you are sinners." Using relatable examples—such as how a young apprentice is encouraged with visions of success rather than reminders of failure—he illustrated how negative self-images undermine spiritual growth while positive, biblically-based identities propel believers forward. The class focused on Romans 6:8-11 and 2 Timothy 1:7, passages that reveal Christians as spiritually raised with Christ, dead to sin, and given a spirit of love and power rather than timidity. Zeller's core teaching was that understanding and embracing God's portrait of our identity in Christ transforms how we live, think, and serve, creating the kind of passionate faith evident in the early church.
