Saul Escapes Damascus

Lesson 17 of 28 September 21, 2020

Teacher Anita Rich presented the account of Saul's escape from Damascus and his subsequent return to Jerusalem, highlighting the dramatic transformation in his life following his encounter with Jesus on the Damascus Road. After his conversion and baptism, Saul spent approximately three years in the Damascus region (including time in Arabia) teaching boldly in synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God and the risen Messiah. Though many believed his message and were baptized, his former enemies—particularly Jewish leaders and the city governor—grew increasingly hostile and plotted his assassination. When spies were stationed at the city gates to capture him, God warned Saul of the danger. His Christian friends devised a daring rescue: they lowered him through a window in the city wall in a large basket, allowing him to escape undetected. The teacher emphasized that despite his fear of rejection from those who remembered his persecution of Christians, Saul returned to Jerusalem and boldly continued preaching Jesus. Barnabas became instrumental in introducing him to the apostles and vouching for his genuine conversion. When opposition in Jerusalem also became dangerous, Saul's friends helped him travel safely to Caesarea and then home to Tarsus. The lesson concluded by noting that following Saul's departure, the church experienced a period of peaceful growth throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, multiplying in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 9:31

So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up in fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit
