Identity - Embracing Godliness

Lesson 6 of 24 August 31, 2020

Richard Sutton taught on the fifth brand of Christian identity: godliness, continuing a year-long series on identity based on 2 Peter 1:3-15. He used the analogy of branding—how companies, nations, and individuals are recognized by distinctive visual marks—to explain how Christians are branded and set apart in the world by their devotion to God. Just as logos like the Apple symbol, the cross, or the fish instantly identify their respective entities, our true nature and devotion to God should be immediately recognizable to those around us. Sutton reviewed the four previously discussed qualities: moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, and perseverance, before introducing godliness as the fifth quality. He emphasized that godliness is the driving force behind all Christian qualities and virtues, making it essential for a profitable and fruitful Christian life. Drawing from 1 Timothy 4:7-9, Sutton defined godliness not merely as being godlike or Christ-like, nor as simply possessing Christian character traits like love, joy, patience, and kindness from Galatians 5. Rather, godliness represents something deeper: a dedicated devotion to God that motivates and underlies all other virtues. Without godliness, believers cannot truly practice moral excellence, pursue knowledge, maintain self-control, or persevere through trials. Sutton concluded that understanding and embracing godliness is fundamental to Christian identity and witness in the world.
