No Longer I

Lesson 9 of 11 June 19, 2025

Teacher Clint Davison presented a comprehensive study on biblical conversion, emphasizing how contemporary culture has distorted this essential biblical concept. He began by exploring common experiences of changing one's mind about important decisions, then connected this to how the Bible describes conversion as far more significant—a "new birth" and "resurrection" from spiritual death. Davison identified three cultural problems that obscure true conversion: the co-opting of religious terminology by secular culture, the modern emphasis on religious tolerance that denies absolute truth, and consumerism's influence in treating religion as a product to sample until you find what works for you. He stressed that God, not individual preference, sets the terms and defines the nature of conversion. The teacher critiqued how the biblical term "born again" has been emptied of meaning through cultural overuse. He distinguished between genuine biblical conversion—a radical, dimensional change affecting one's entire being—and the shallow cultural version that amounts to little more than joining a club or giving up a bad habit while maintaining unchanged values and direction. Davison emphasized that conversion is not painless alignment with a comfortable philosophy that reaffirms personal prejudices, but rather a complete turnaround in life orientation and nature. He referenced Gary Freeman's observation that a reasonably intelligent person can perform religious amenities without experiencing any drastic change, contrasting this with the transformative power Scripture promises through true conversion.
